2017 Giving Back Update: Caring for People and Communities

Since its inception, The Coca-Cola Company has built a strong legacy of giving back. In 1984, The Coca-Cola Foundation was formally launched as the global philanthropic arm of The Coca-Cola Company and today continues its dedication to communities around the world.

The Coca-Cola Company commits to giving back 1% of our annual operating income. We do that through our own donations and by providing financial support to The Coca-Cola Foundation which, in turn, extends charitable grants that are guided by its three core priorities: women, water and community well-being.

In 2017, the company’s donations, when combined with the foundation’s charitable grants, equaled $138 million, equivalent to 1.6% of the company’s operating income.

The Coca-Cola Foundation’s grants reached more than 330 organizations in more than 110 countries and territories, with 88% of the grants going to projects that support its core priorities.

Through more than 30 years of giving back, The Coca-Cola Foundation has granted more than $900 million, including grants that help protect the environment, promote recycling, empower women and enhance the overall well-being of communities.

Supporting Water and Environmental Programs

The Coca-Cola Foundation supports initiatives that provide access to clean water and sanitation, protect watersheds in water-stressed regions, engage farmers in advancing sustainable water use (such as rainwater harvesting and water reuse for irrigation), promote recycling programs and raise awareness about water issues among communities and industry.

In 2017, The Coca-Cola Foundation invested $24.9 million to support water projects. For example, One Drop Foundation, the Inter-American Development Bank, The Coca-Cola Foundation and FEMSA Foundation announced a collective $25 million investment in Lazos de Agua, an initiative to provide 200,000 people with access to more safe and affordable water and improved sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services in Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Colombia and Paraguay by 2021.

And together, Coca-Cola Great Britain, Coca-Cola European Partners and World Wildlife Fund-United Kingdom are helping improve English rivers. A $515,000 grant in 2017 supported 100 farmers in the East Anglian River Basin in developing farm management plans to improve soil conditions and reduce farm run-off into nearby streams.

Also in 2017, The Coca-Cola Foundation invested more than $5.6 million in community recycling efforts in North America. Through the Keep America Beautiful Public Space Recycling Infrastructure grant program, 3,500 recycling bins were distributed to community groups, government entities, and colleges and universities in the United States to collect recyclables in public spaces, and 1,500 smaller recycling baskets were given for use in college dorm rooms. Since 2007, the program has awarded nearly 50,000 recycling bins to community partners, including more than 36,000 bins for public spaces in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Empowering Women

The Coca-Cola Foundation is committed to the economic empowerment of women. In 2017, the foundation invested more than $14 million to empower women globally. This investment included a $1 million pledge to The Atlanta Women’s Foundation’s “Breaking Barriers, Building Women: Economic Empowerment Program,” which will provide technical skills training and/or higher education opportunities for 2,000 women living in poverty in the Atlanta area. The grant also funds housing, childcare, healthcare, transportation and other critical support services for program participants on an as-needed basis.

In Turkey, $800,000 was awarded to Habitat Association, a sustainable development-focused non-governmental organization (NGO), to train 9,000 women from seven regions and 30 cities on computer and financial literacy, as well as communication and business entrepreneurship skills. And, in Spain, Fundación Mujeres, a nonprofit that implements intervention projects to achieve effective equal rights, received $577,000 to train and develop up to 600 unemployed women to become successful business owners. In addition, Fundación Mujeres provided online training to all 3,700 women of the “GIRA Women” entrepreneurial program and fostered the 10 best projects with mentoring services for three months. Finally, the three best business ideas received three additional months of mentoring and €3,000 of seed capital each.

Strengthening Communities

The Coca-Cola Foundation focuses a large portion of its giving on initiatives that strengthen and enrich communities, including education, youth development, HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention, arts and culture, and disaster relief.

In 2017, there were many significant natural disasters across the globe. The Coca-Cola Foundation provided approximately $7 million to disaster relief efforts, including $3 million to help people devastated by three back-to-back hurricanes, Harvey, Irma and Maria.

The foundation also provided $1 million for recovery efforts following two large earthquakes in Mexico; $1.5 million in disaster relief funding to address flooding impacts in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand, Colombia and Peru; $500,000 to combat challenges associated with the deadliest week of wildfires in California history; and $1 million for famine relief in Africa. Through the foundation’s water program, Replenish Africa Initiative (RAIN,) an additional $9.6 million has been allocated to support resilience in famine- and drought-related efforts in the African countries of Chad, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda.

The foundation continued to fund educational advancement in 2017 and invested approximately $7 million in support of first generation scholarships through 33 institutions and organizations across the Americas. There were more than 2,600 student beneficiaries of these scholarships.

Coca-Cola Matching Gifts Program and Employee Disaster

Through the Coca-Cola Matching Gifts Program, eligible employees of The Coca-Cola Company make personal contributions to qualified organizations and The Coca-Cola Foundation matches those contributions on a 2-to-1 basis. In 2017, The Coca-Cola Foundation donated $7.5 million through this program.

The Coca-Cola Company’s employees also support one another during times of need. In 2016, The Coca-Cola Foundation provided initial seed funding to establish The Coca-Cola Employee Disaster Relief Fund. Due to the generous support from company employees, The Coca-Cola Company, The Coca-Cola Foundation and our bottling partners, The Coca-Cola Employee Disaster Relief Fund provided more than $1 million to nearly 800 Coca-Cola system employees in the United States and the Caribbean in 2017.
