We recognize the importance of ensuring that our Company and our bottling partners make a positive contribution to supporting the environment. We’ll achieve this through both continually improving own operations and in building partnerships that can spur innovative solutions to some of the most complex challenges we face, such as water stewardship, energy efficiency and waste prevention.
We have made important progress such as becoming the first Fortune 500 Company to replenish 100% of the water we use, a goal that was achieved five years ahead of schedule. But we recognize there is more to be done. We recently announced a new global packaging strategy - and a vision for a World Without Waste – which will see us investing in our packaging and investing in our planet with an ambition to help tackle the world’s packaging problem and help make waste a thing of the past. Our global target is to take back a bottle or can for each one we produce by 2030. In Europe, that target is even more ambitious.
We work with our bottling partners Coca-Cola European Partners and Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company to ensure that we develop local sustainability action plans that reflect both the progress being made and local environment. For example, in Western Europe we are now looking to reduce consumption in our manufacturing operations by 20%. We are halving our direct carbon emissions, partly by purchasing 100% renewable electricity, and we will reduce the carbon footprint of "the drink in your hand” by 25 percent by 2020.
